However first, allow me explain how it was that this guide came about…..allow me to advise you the story of my Dad’s battle with Pancreatitis!

My Father had a long history of stomach ailments……..however pancreatitis was never diagnosed!

For provided that I could remember my Father suffered from continuous bouts of agony especially around meal times.  I've an enduring picture of him seated at the kitchen table bent over with elbows on the table and hands shielding his eyes.  “What’s the matter, Dad?” I'd say.  “Oh, it’s only heartburn!” he’d say.  Or “hiccups”, or in later years “my ulcer’s playing up” or “hiatal hernia”.

The pains seemed to strike more and more often and the doctors always seemed to produce a number of explanation for the cause.  He’d been given the run down – “It’s only heartburn.  Go home and take two paracetemol for the agony”.  So off he’d go and take the aspirin, or Mylanta, or a number of other drug that seemed to have little overall effect whatsoever.

You see my Dad, Les, had a history of gastro-intestinal ailments and had been prescribed a load of diverse drugs over time, none of which seemed to fully fix his difficulties.  Among other things, he’d been diagnosed with a duodenal ulcer, hiatus hernia, appendicitis and diabetes and despite a cocktail of drug treatments he never truly got 100 percent well.

It wasn’t until he was diagnosed with a major attack of acute pancreatitis in July 2004 that all the family began to think that maybe this was what had been causing his difficulties all these years and that for all that time he had been having pancreatitis attacks and no-one ever knew!

Fact is, my Dad never recovered from this bout of pancreatitis!  After having breakfast with his granddaughter, he became violently ill.  He was taken to hospital by Ambulance and placed on a intravenous drip and given pain medication.  He had blood tests, an ultra-sound and CT scan – all of which pointed to pancreatitis.

We didn’t know it at the time, however even then there were a number of signs that this battle was going to become a very difficult one for Les to win.  On the second and third days, Les’ organ functions were continuing to deteriorate.  He was placed into a medically-induced coma hoping that this may enable the organs to repair themselves.  It turned out to become a forlorn hope!

Finally, after a further 2 days, it was decided to operate.  Dad’s body had been filling with toxins and infection from the malfunctioning pancreas.  We were told that if Dad had surgery he could die, however if he didn’t then it was sure that he would.  Surgery discovered that the damage done by the malfunctioning pancreas was too widespread.  The pancreas had ‘turned on itself’ and had become gangrenous.  Enzymes released by the pancreas had eaten into the intestines.  Surgeons removed over three feet of large intestine and it was all black.  Dad had lost many blood.  There was no hope!  Unfortunately, my Dad passed away on Tuesday 13 July, 2004, only over 5 days after an attack of acute pancreatitis.

Have faith in me, I’m not sharing this sad story of my Dad’s passing to scare anybody who currently has or suspects they may have pancreatitis.  Rather, it’s my strong belief that with proper, earlier diagnosis, Dad might even now be with us today.  By telling this story it’s my sincere hope that others may be saved.  Even though the're a percentage of pancreatitis cases that are from unknown causes and even though acute pancreatitis can be known to kill, I strongly suspect that Dad had several warning signs in the lead up to this final attack which claimed his life.  There’s only too much evidence suggesting that he had the symptoms and was suffering from pancreatitis and didn’t know it.

It still distresses me to think that Dad’s quality of life was so poorly affected by this condition over a lot of years and that he was not suitably treated for it.  If just the doctors had picked it up earlier.

Ever since, I’ve torn myself apart with more ‘IF JUST’ questions:

  • If just we’d known the way to ask the right sort of probing questions of those providing treatment.
  • If just he’d been able to tell the doctors further about how he was feeling (something I’ve discovered is important if you're to gain a fast and proper diagnosis) maybe that could have alerted them to the possibility that he had pancreatitis.
  • If just he’d known more regarding the dietary requirements in treating this disease – the right types of food to eat, the foods that caused the the majority of aggravation and agony could have been eliminated and replaced with others that could assist alleviate it and reduce the effects of the pancreatitis.
  • If just we’d found out further about alternative treatments and the way they may have eased the agony and decreased the chances of further attacks as they have for so a lot others amongst disease
  • If just we’d known more regarding the possible complications of pancreatitis (for example diabetes) and the side-effects of various treatments, we may have been able to manage and handle and minimize attacks
  • If just we’d been able to talk to others who had pancreatitis we may have been more attuned to how it's caused and the way you can still enjoy a productive and enjoyable life despite having pancreatitis

Finally, I could take no more and since then I've dedicated myself to finding out the solutions to such questions and providing solutions to other sufferers.

With no getting too far into my investigations and fact finding studies I realized that Frustration (not to mention Anxiety Agony) is an incredibly common feeling endured by pancreatitis sufferers the planet earth over.

My frustration with all this led me on a voyage of discovery….with more and more questions to be answered for example:
